Volunteers Devote Their Time And Talents To Helping Those In Need
Since the very beginning, volunteers have stood shoulder-to-shoulder
with Salvation Army officers to provide help for the poor and
downtrodden and those affected by natural disasters. In fact, the name "The Salvation Army" came about in 1878 when William Booth adapted it
from a phrase he read in a report that described the organization as a
"volunteer army."
There are opportunities to help all throughout the year. Individuals
and groups are needed to help with a variety of projects, including:
serving meals to homeless individuals, helping at a food pantry,
serving as a coach for youth sports teams, assisting with Meals on
Wheels, helping low-income children with homework after school,
providing free legal assistance as a volunteer attorney, securing
donations of school supplies for underprivileged children and many
more. (Specific volunteer roles will vary from one Salvation Army
center to another.)
Volunteers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and ages, and
The Salvation Army appreciates and welcomes them all.
Become a part of the army behind the Army by serving as a volunteer.
